![]() Image of Savary's parabolic dunes in DL 1375 ![]() Location of dunes on island (Source: Postglacial Landscape Evolution of Savary Island, Department of Earth Sciences, SFU) Parabolic dunes are U-shaped dunes that are found only in humid coastal areas. They are made when the stabilizing plant cover of an existing linear dune is destroyed exposing the sand to the wind. A ridge, often referred to as a blowout, is then pushed into the dune beyond. Notes 1. Savary's parabolic dunes trend to the northwest. This means that they were formed by paleowinds [the winds of the past] that blew from the southeast. |
