| Witches' Trail |
![]() Witch Trees by Maud Rees Sherman This was the name of a trail that used to run along the cliffs from Savary Shores to South Beach. It passed many cliff-perching trees that were twisted and gnarly from resisting storms. The above watercolour by Maud Rees Sherman was no doubt painted along this trail, and my bet is that those particular trees are why the trail got its name. According to Gary Sim: "This watercolour was one of a number of paintings given to the author by the late Mrs. Joan Dendys, a long-time friend and neighbour of the Sherman family. The scene was identified by the late Daryl Duke as Savary Island, and members of the Savary Island Heritage Society further identified these two trees as "the Witch Trees." I was unable to locate them on the island because they are no longer in existence." - Gary Sim (Source: Sim Publishing ) Note that only a few parts of this trail still exist, as the houses built overlooking South Beach effectively ended the trail there. Notes 1. A more modern, politically correct sensibility would never dream of naming something Witches Trail, hence a similar type of mid-island (and more recently named) trail is called the Spirit Trail, and a similar type of gnarly tree is called the Spirit Tree. |
