(Aka Tla'amin Nation)
One of the 20 Coast Salish tribes inhabiting Canada's west coast. Sliammon territory stretched from Desolation Sound to Stillwater along the Malaspina Strait. It also included Harwood, Hernando, and Savary islands, and the north end of Texada island. Pre-contact, the Sliammon's ancestors hunted, fished and camped on Savary. (Source: Kennedy, 1992, p16) Notes 1. Pre-contact, in May and June the Sliammon would canoe to Savary to meet with the Island Comox Salish to conduct a clam harvest. 2. They speak the Éy7á7juuthem language, a Coast Salish Language that is spoken by the Sliammon, K'omoks, Klahoose, and Homalco First Nations. Linguists also call this language Mainland Comox. In addition to the Sliammon, there are two other First Nations that claim Savary Island as part of their traditional territory: the Klahoose and the Homalco. Note that these three first nations were split by the Canadian government into different band councils, even though, historically, they considered themselves united as the Tla A'min (aka the Mainland K'omoks). |

I cannot recommend Sliammon-elder Elsie Paul's book — Written As I Remember It — highly enough.
