A leathery-leaved shrub in the heather family, native to western North America.  Ripe salal berries It is a common coniferous forest understory species and can dominate large areas. Edible: Its dark blue berries and its young leaves are both edible. The berries were a significant food resource for native people, who both ate them fresh and dried them into cakes.
