| Cascara |
![]() A small, deciduous tree or shrub with greyish-black bark that grows to about 10 metres tall. It is valued for its bark, which contains a laxative of the same name. Notes 1. It reproduces by small seeds inside its small black berries, which are eaten and transported by birds. 2. The Nuu-chah-nulth people used the wood to make chisel handles, and the Skagit people produced a green dye from the bark. 3. Spanish priests in California named the tree Cascara sagrada, meaning "sacred bark," perhaps because of (1) the bark's medicinal properties or (2) its resemblance to the wood used for the ark of the covenant.
